I always hate when people pretend that they're super upset when someone famous dies as if they knew the person, and that will probably happen a lot with Carlin, but I'm very sad. I watched his latest HBO special a few weeks ago and much of it deals with death. I remember thinking at the time that I hoped his body would hold up because his mind was still so sharp. With him and Hunter S. Thompson I feel like we're starting to lose the few who really got it.

I hate that too, but I've been really upset lately. Johnny Cash, June Carter, James Brown, George Carlin, Elliott Smith, and I can think of a dozen other greats that have died in the last few years. It makes me even more morose when I think about how my daughter doesn't have the opportunity to be inspired by some of my heroes, at least not in the same way.
